In NY State, 3rd and 4th graders can ski or snowboard for nearly free (rentals included, and with lessons) at participating mountain resorts across the state. For a small fee to get the passport, it’s super easy to introduce young kids to the thrill of these two sports. Since my oldest child started 3rd grade this past fall, and she is already a downhill skier, we purchased a passport for $26, which enabled her to take snowboard lessons for free at two local ski resorts, a savings of over $150 (she could have gone to more resorts but we combined these lessons with snowboard lessons we paid for at another top local resort to give her five lessons in all). We geared her up with the latest snowboard boots and board, and got semi-private lessons because snowboard groups are typically smaller than ski groups at lesson time. The young adults that taught her were awesome! They taught her the basics of snowboarding and made it fun. By the end of the five lessons, she was riding down the bunny hill, ready to move onto the bigger mountain next season.
