Recycle Your Old Nordic Equipment
The Saratoga Biathlon Club is offering a way to recycle old nordic skiing equipment: In an effort to encourage wider participation and introduce the sport of cross country skiing to new potential skiers, the Saratoga Biathlon Club has established an "Equipment Borrow Bank." This will allow interested children who do not yet have equipment to borrow some and join in the fun, without having to incur the cost of buying equipment. The hope is that they will discover what we already know about the fun of skiing, the thrill of racing and the comradery of our fine club members, and they will want to go on to purchase their own equipment and continue to participate in the future.
The Saratoga BKYSL "Borrow Bank" is very limited at this point. Do you have any usable kid-sized Nordic ski equipment collecting dust in the basement or garage? If so give Sean a call at 518-583-6132. They can also use old bindings, etc. from adult sized equipment.

The Basics of Nordic Skiing
Cross-country or backcountry skiing, or Nordic is the oldest form of skiing and was developed in Scandinavia as a way of traveling over snow. It uses free-heel bindings that attach at the toes of the skier's boots but not at the heels. Various specialties of competitive or recreational skiing developed from this basic style, sub-genres of Nordic skiing include: Cross-country skiing, Telemark, Ski touring, Ski mountaineering, Ski-flying and ski jumping, Skijoring."
Nordic skiing is a combination of winter sports that encompasses all types of skiing where the heel of the boot cannot be fixed to the ski, as opposed to Alpine skiing.
Nordic skiing Olympic events are cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, and biathlon. A further Nordic discipline is Telemark skiing.
The most popular type of Nordic skiing is recreational cross-country skiing or sometimes known as touring. Some skiers stay out for extended periods using tents and equipment similar to bushwalkers and hikers, whereas others take relatively short trips from ski resorts on maintained trails.
